Phalaenopsis japonica

The Japan Sedirea

Japonica has a relatively short lifespan in comparison to other species; flowering for only 4 or 5 seasons before dying off. Not all is lost though, it is possible to propagate the plant via keikis. Some will produce keikis on their own which can be safely removed once it has a minimum of 2 leaves of its own, preferably more and at least 3 or 4 roots. Though I find it best to initiate them in advance using keiki grow paste from their second flowering season, in case the plant doesn't produce any on its own.

It is particularly important for Phalaenopsis japonica to be given a rest period during the Winter months in which it goes into dormancy. Both the temperature and watering should be reduced and fertiliser eliminated. If the plant does not experience dormancy, it may continue blooming throughout the year, drastically reducing its already short lifespan.
